Education and Outreach

Instream flow science appears complex, and the concept and value of instream flow protection are difficult for many people to understand. Education and outreach are needed to promote understanding among a variety of audiences, ranging from professional water managers to policy makers, from farmers to families, and from recreational fishermen to industrial users of water.

The Southern Instream Flow Network was originally established to increase knowledge and communication of flow in southeastern waters among those in the region who are responsible for water policy, and to help them improve the scientific basis for good protective instream flow policy. Because their success depends upon the support and understanding of all water users, education and outreach beyond the original audience is necessary. The products in this section are designed to help all individuals better express and understand the science and value of protecting natural instream flow to sustain aquatic resources for the benefit of all.
